CIRCULAR PLATFORM FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

SENS ERECYCLING RECYCLING 2022

Electrical devices often become redundant due to improved technologies in the market. As a result, they either end up in the cellar, or if they’ve broken down, thrown away even when they only need minor repairs. SENS eRecycling, on a mission to change the fate of these devices, gives end users a platform to repair, recycle or resell these items, thus increasing the lifecycle of these products. Thanks to the platform, SENS eRecycling can analyze customer behavior and come up with new services to make this economy even more sustainable.

"The platform connects us directly to the end-consumers. This enables us to raise awareness at their level and help increase the useful life of these devices."

CHALLENGE

MOTIVATING PEOPLE TO CONSUME IN AN ECO-FRIENDLY WAY

This isn’t SENS eRecycling’s first project when it comes to environment protection in Switzerland. It has been continuously working for sustainable recycling of disused electrical and electronic appliances as well as lamps, lighting equipment and photovoltaic systems. However, this is the first time they have properly engaged the end-user. And it is their new platform that has allowed them to reach more and more people, helping educate the masses when it comes to using electrical appliances in a resource-saving manner.

Sometimes it is not easy to determine what to do with an appliance. For instance, does one get rid of a freezer one does not need? Sell or recycle it? The decision isn’t always easy. SENS eRecycling platform provides users with guidance on whether selling, recycling, or repairing the equipment makes the most sense.

PRODUCT STRATEGY

There were two major requirements for the product strategy: Raising awareness among the people who use electrical equipment day in and day out was one task. Storing and collecting data on the appliances that were in the usage cycle was the other. This meant cooperating between all market participants. As a result, the product was conceived as an interactive «stateless responsive» platform, where the manufacturers, end users, and SENS eRecycling came together. In addition to the above, the «Electro Bags» service, where SENS collects the equipment from your given address, was also integrated into the new product.

MINIMAL VIABLE PRODUCT (MVP)

The core function of the MVP is the recommendation tool. SENS eRecycling uses information like the device category, condition, and age to recommend the most sustainable solution: sell, repair, or recycle. Once the user accepts a recommendation, there are further services available:
• Sales help: The expected sales price and the link to the selling platform
• Repair help: Contact details of certified repair partners in Switzerland
• Recycling help: Ordering recycling bags or organizing a pickup
Context-relevant content was also added to the platform. To achieve this, we have set up an interface that not only displays blog posts from SENS eRecycling but also ones from its partners. A comprehensive tracking system has also been set up. This allows SENS eRecycling to know which devices are in circulation. It helps them gather insights into user interactions and decisions.

"The MVP was created in just ten weeks. SENS eRecycling let us innovate, was open to suggestions and supported us in trying things out. All that was the reason we succeeded in this sprint."
